LAÍS LOPES

Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Laís Lopes is an artist and researcher working primarily with photography. Originally trained in filmmaking, she holds an MA and PhD in Communication and Semiotics, where her research examined the post-photographic practices of women artists. Today, montage forms the conceptual and formal foundation of her photographic practice, through which she investigates photography as a hybrid medium that operates between nature and culture.

After an early period of artistic production, Laís spent more than a decade working in Brazil's public cultural sector, contributing to cultural policy and the development of programs supporting the audiovisual arts. This experience expanded her understanding of visual culture as a social and political force. Recently returning to her artistic practice, her work combines archival fragments, constructed landscapes, and digital interventions to interrogate national imaginaries and environmental narratives, questioning how images mediate our sense of place and belonging.

Laís’ work has been presented in Brazil and internationally. Her series North, South, East, West was a Finalist at the Fine Art Photography Awards (2026) and received an Honorable Mention at the Black & White International Photo Awards (2026). She will be part of the forthcoming group exhibition “Entanglement” this August at B-part Exhibition in Berlin.
